New paper on official aid policies in Europe
9 October 2009
Our latest paper – Civil Society and Development: Challenges from European Governments? A review of official aid policies in Europe and their implications for civil society – is now available to download.
The paper reviews recent official aid policy from Denmark, Sweden, the UK and the Netherlands, focusing particularly on the implications of the bilateral donors’ approaches to civil society. Our analysis raises questions regarding a tension between funding frameworks that dominate the implementation of the policies, and the nature of civil society as diverse and autonomous.
This policy briefing paper is part of our wider research focus on the aid effectiveness agenda and its impacts. It follows our well-received paper, Improving Aid Effectiveness: A review of recent initiatives for CSOs.
Both of these papers will contribute to upcoming research to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the Paris Declaration, which will examine the impact of the aid effectiveness agenda on southern civil society, through both a thematic focus and empirical country case studies.
