1. The ESRC has awarded a grant to INTRAC for the following piece of research:
INGO Engagement with Indigenous Social Movements in the Peruvian Amazon. This piece of research will study the collaboration between a local indigenous social movement in the Camisea region of the Peruvian Amazon and international NGOs that aim to both uphold indigenous rights and preserve biodiversity. The key research question is:
How does engagement with international non-governmental actors impact upon indigenous social movements in terms of their mission, activities, membership and self-presentation?
2. The ESRC is funding a PhD Studentship:
CASE - Collaborative Awards in Science and Engineering
The idea behind the ESRC CASE Awards is to promote partnerships between universities and
public/non-profit/private institutions, through joint faciliation of doctoral study. INTRAC's application to LSE (the London School of Economics and Political Science) to fund a PhD under this scheme has been accepted. The subject of the study is urban social movements in Brazil.
Specifically, the study will look at the strategies used by movements of the homeless in Sao Paulo to force municipal governments to enter into negotiations with them, so as to get housing for their members. The study will also look at
the way in which the many different homeless movements in the city interact/collaborate/compete with each other, how leaders try to promote better housing policy, and how they have linked up with powerful national social movements, in particular the landless rural workers (MST) to promote their cause. As such, the project will be looking at issues of civil society participation in local governance, grassroots activism and city wide networking.
