At the Lebanon workshop NGOs, think tanks and civil society groups were represented from more than ten countries of the Middle East.
The meeting focused on war in the region, Israeli occupation and military aggression as well as economic and social insecurity created out of this situation.
The effects upon vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly are a real concern, as well as the rising numbers of refugees from the war in Iraq.
Participants considered:
• The overriding effects of war and occupation in Iraq and Palestine and the impact that this level of tension and instability has had on development in other countries such as Syria and the Lebanon, where civilians are living under constant threats and fear.
• How, in the summer of 2006, the USA and UK launched the now hotly contested expression ‘War on Terror’, whilst at the same time blocking efforts to adopt human rights agreements and conventions.
