Support to Handicap International (South Eastern Europe)

INTRAC has been working since 2005 with the Handicap International SHARE SEE (Self-Help and Advocacy for Rights and Equal opportunities – South East Europe) project, providing technical support in training, monitoring and evaluation and promotion of regional exchanges of good practice between local training organisations.

The project was established in 2003 to help build the capacity of disabled people organisations and thereby promote equal opportunities and full participation of people with disabilities in South East Europe. The aim was to create a regional cross disability movement and the requisite conditions to ensure social change.

Accountability and learning with Trocaire International

INTRAC provided consultancy support to Trocaire to assist with the implementation of the organisation’s new Accountability and Learning Framework, through developing a set of training modules for programme staff in six organisational regions. Working closely with the Trocaire Programme Quality Advisor INTRAC developed training materials in:

Training of Trainers for the Charity Commission (The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia)

The Charity Commission and the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Social Affairs recognised a need to strengthen the ministry’s in-house training capacity. INTRAC was invited to assist with enhancing the Regulator’s capacity to provide effective support to the NGO sector through developing, delivering and monitoring a training of trainers programme. The programme aimed to strengthen the training capacity of the MoSA staff in order for them to be better able to provide support to Saudi Arabian NGOs.

Six modules were delivered between April 2007 and March 2008, with field visits to regions to observe and provide support to the trainees during training sessions.

Civil society scoping visit to The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

INTRAC was invited by the British Embassy and the Ministry of Social Affairs to scope the environment in which Saudi charities are operating and to offer a proposal that would increase the capacity of these charities to deliver more effective programmes within their fields.

A fully participatory scoping process was completed, working closely with the MoSA and the local charities, exploring the capacity building needs of this budding civil society sector. The consultant visited nine national charities in Riyadh and Jeddah, in order to understand their histories, observe some of their current activities and discuss their training needs. These visits were supplemented by discussions with members of staff from MoSA, and visits to other relevant organisations.

It is a membership organisation that was looking for help with organisational assessments of specified member organisations. INTRAC was engaged to complete four of the assessments. These were carried out in Ireland, South Africa, Nigeria, Uganda and Kenya. The assessment teams included an INTRAC consultant and a member of the organisation being assessed. The purpose of the assessments was to:

Development of civil society - Oman

INTRAC was engaged by the Oman Ministry of Social Development and the British Embassy to assist in developing the capacity of Omani NGOs. This was to enable them to work more effectively and accountably to help protect the human rights of vulnerable groups in society (particularly women), through a training programme of workshops, discussion forums and conferences both nationally and regionally. Over a two-year period INTRAC has provided input into the following areas:

INTRAC also facilitated the development of an Oman umbrella organisation of NGOs, which has developed a full strategic plan for its future development.

Evaluation of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)

The International HIV/AIDS Alliance engaged INTRAC to complete a two country capacity study of indigenous civil society HIV/AIDS organisations. The study explored the following areas:

Evaluation of CRDA Ethiopia

This review aimed to garner the perceptions of as wide a range of stakeholders as possible, therefore the time in Ethiopia was spent holding meetings with a wide range of people from: CRDA membership (Addis and regional), non-member groups, NGOs, other civil society groups (regional and Addis-based), regional and national-based government entities, international donors, and other people with experience of the sector generally and CRDA specifically.

The TOR focussed on three major questions:
1) The impact of the work of CRDA on Ethiopian civil society
2) The perceptions of different stakeholders of the performance of CRDA
3) The degree to which the change process has been taken forwards.

The review covered a series of important questions and reflects the challenges behind both understanding CRDA and the challenges within the organisation itself; the long history, the changed roles over the years, the evolving nature of the programme, the variety and number of activities, and the fact that so many people have totally different views of what CRDA is, what it does and what it should do.

Rights-based approach training – SCIAF (Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund)

INTRAC facilitated a four-day training course with the overseas team of SCIAF at their Glasgow HQ on the topics of a rights based approach and impact assessment

Study tours – World Learning Croatia

In March 2008, INTRAC co-ordinated two week-long study tours of the UK for World Learning Croatia as part of the USAID FORECAST Program. The first trip was to look at the role of UK foundations and was for staff of the National Foundation for Civil Society Development in Croatia. Visits included the Big Lottery, National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) and Capacity Builders England.

The second tour, co-hosted with the Charity Commission, focussed on the NGO-Government consultation process, public benefit and charity status in the UK. Two days were spent with the Charity Commission looking at the Commission’s work and the role of the charity sector. The rest of the week included visits to NCVO and the Commission for the Compact. Both parties visited INTRAC for training sessions on topics including action planning and managing change.
