"I appreciated the explorative nature... brave and much needed. I liked the presentation of practical, real life examples from different regions of this world. I'll see if we can apply some of your suggestions in our ongoing work." (Russell Kerkhoven)

Civil society organisations (CSOs) operate in a complex and constantly changing environment. This has significant implications for their effectiveness. This paper suggests that by helping CSOs to understand and strenghthen analytical and adaptive capacities, we may help them increase their effectiveness. The authors offer a cross-disciplinary review of current thinking about analytical and adaptive capacity, drawing on fields such as organisational learning and change, strategic management, systems thinking and complexity theory. The paper proposes practical considerations which may guide future efforts to develop the analytical and adaptive capacities of CSOs.
