CSO Awards Ceremony

The Cyprus Civil Society Organisation Awards Ceremony was a red carpet celebration event! This exciting Awards Ceremony showed appreciation for and celebrated Cypriot civil society organisations and the important work that they do in contributing to social development and change in Cyprus.

Amidst a festive atmosphere of music, decorations and surprises for all, 16 outstanding organisations received awards for their efforts.

The winners of the 2008 Civil Society Awards Ceremony are:

Education and Culture:
HASDER Folk Arts Association and KENTHEA Information and Rehabilitation Centre for Drug addiction

Environment:
Biologist Association ‘Bio Der’ and Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association-CYMEPA

Gender:
Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in Family and Mediterranean Sports Association

Health:
The Cyprus Association for Cancer Patients and Friends and Help Those With Cancer Association

Youth:
Agros Youth Club and AKOVA Women’s Association

Social Inclusion:
Future Worlds Center and Turkish Cypriot Special Education Foundation (ÖZEV)

Island-Wide Cooperation:
Cyprus Dyslexia Association and Union of Chambers of Cyprus Turkish Engineers and Architects

Two additional awards in Island-Wide Cooperation went to
Association for Historical Dialogue and Research and Peace Players International Cyprus.

Selecting the award-winning organisations

A jury of 9 individuals - men and women, Greek and Turkish Cypriot, from a variety of affiliations - chose the award-winning organisations according to a set of criteria relating to the organisations' progress, impact and ability to deal with difficulties. The organisations were assessed only based on their paper applications - there were no visits and none of the jury members have contacts with any of the nominated organisations. 67 organisations sent in nominations! The Chair of the Jury, Mr Arne Strand, explains the selection process in the document below.
The decisions were difficult but in the end, 16 organisations were selected for awards:
