INTRAC's conference will revisit the relevance of civil society for development by examining the diversity of forms and activities within civil societies around the world. The potential range of civil society activity is much broader than the formal initiatives typically promoted by aid agencies.
We expect to compare a series of case studies illustrating different types of action, processes and approaches by a range of actors and organisations. By comparing different cases we will draw conclusions about factors influencing the civil society space in particular countries, and across regions.
We are looking for case studies (of between 1000-2000 words) of social action that exhibit the pluralism within civil society in:
Level of organisation: e.g. social movements, informal networks, formal organisations, collaborative enterprises
Scale: e.g. local, national, regional, international, global, internet-based
Objectives: e.g. promoting accountability, public education, policy lobbying, service provision, expanding health care, public interest law
Issues: e.g. agriculture, disabilities, human rights, health care, legal reform, religion, labour
Relationship with the state: e.g. critical, collaborative, legal, disengaged, selective
Donor relationships: e.g. partnership, sub-contract, autonomous
Opportunity to showcase your civil society work
Submit case studies to Zoe Wilkinson by 25 September 2008.
