Capacity building for advocacy
Why advocacy?
How best can we carry out capacity building to help CSOs do advocacy? This Praxis theme looks at the conceptual debates and experiences on the ground to develop learning for practitioners.
Recent thinking and changes in approaches to civil society and development work have placed a greater emphasis on advocacy by CSOs. Previous approaches focusing on the service delivery role of CSOs are often felt to have had a limited impact. Many argue that civil society can only have a deep and sustainable impact if CSOs succeed in influencing key policies and decision makers. For many CSOs, this represents a significant shift in the focus of their work and they often lack the skills necessary for conducting effective advocacy.
Learning group
A learning group is being set up to steer the work of this theme. Group members will be drawn from local NGOs in developing countries, international NGOs, consultants, academics and advocacy specialists. Members will be able to participate in online discussions, share and discuss challenges and success stories, publicise their events, access resources and publish their experiences of conducting work in this area.
Resources
A Praxis Paper on capacity building for advocacy is currently being developed. We are also interested to hear of interesting experiences of undertaking work in this area that can be published as Praxis notes. Please email your experiences to the Praxis team.
