In 2009, INTRAC began a new phase of work on the development of civil society in Central Asia. From our regional office in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, a team of four staff works with established and new partners across five countries within the region – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan – with the goal of increasing participation by local people and between CSOs, local government and donor agencies.   INTRAC Central Asia team

Under the new strategy between 2009-11 INTRAC aimed to:

  •  Reduce the isolation of civil society in Central Asia by working alongside national and regional networks and associations advocating for social and economic justice and defending the space for civil society – strengthening networks and facilitating links with international allies and partners
  • Offer a flexible and responsive service of training, consultancy, information and research aimed at developing and deepening values, approaches and systems appropriate to the civil society sector
  • Continue provision of capacity building support to local NGO partners and social movements in the region, to:
    1) strengthen the participation and empowerment of vulnerable and marginalised communities
    2) improve the quality of service delivery by NGOs and ensure that good practice is communicated to government agencies and, where possible, converted into new and wider policy initiatives.
  • Build up further the human, organisational and financial resources necessary for a self-sustaining, high-quality INTRAC programme in Central Asia.

This strategy has been developed through a range of training courses, consultancy, research, evaluating organisations and their programmes, and focusing on new approaches to community development. Find out more about INTRAC’s work and the rich resources it has generated.
