Nazneen Kanji

Nazneen joined the INTRAC board in 2011. She works for the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) leading a research programme to assess the quality of life of people living in selected regions in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Syria, Mali and Mozambique.Nazneen Kanji image Nazneen is a social policy specialist who worked with the government of Mozambique throughout the 1980s and then moved into policy research, teaching and consultancy work after completing a PhD at the London School of Economics on structural adjustment and urban poverty in Zimbabwe. She has carried out field research in various Sub-Saharan African countries and in South and Central Asia, including work with many NGOs. Her main research area is related to gender and livelihoods, in rural and urban contexts.

She has taught at the LSE and worked for the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). Nazneen continues to be on the Editorial Boards of Environment and Urbanization and PLA Notes, published by IIED. She has undertaken consultancies for DFID, SDC, UN HABITAT, CARE International and SNV among other agencies. She was a member of the Gender Expert Group on Trade (Department of Trade and Industry, UK) and a member of the Africa Grants Committee, Comic Relief, UK in the 2000s. Her most recent publication is the book 'Non-Governmental Organisations and Development' (with D. Lewis, 2009).
