INTRAC has been providing high-quality consultancy support to civil society organisations since 1991. We are best known for our extensive expertise in monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) and organisational development (OD).
Today, our consultancy work is undertaken by our own on-staff consultants and by our extensive network of independent consultants. Collectively, we can draw on a huge wealth of expertise and knowledge specific to particular contexts around the world.
What makes INTRAC different?
For INTRAC, supporting civil society organisations through consultancy supports us to deliver our mission. We are ourselves a non-profit, civil society organisation and we believe that strengthening civil society organisations is a key contribution to positive social change. All our consultants have been active members of civil society and bring deep practical experience of these organisations and many of the challenges they face. Together, we practice what we call ethical and values-driven consultancy.
We aim for the majority of our consultancy work to be led and delivered by network members based across Africa, Middle East, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe by 2028, actively contributing to resilient, effective and legitimate local and global civil society.
Ethical and values-driven consultancy
Our experience shows us that, if delivered through an ethical and values-driven lens, consultancy can both support more sustainable, impactful civil society, and contribute to decolonising and shifting the power within the aid system.
We focus on three things:
- The knowledge, skills and experiences each consultant brings. Lived experience and context-based knowledge are valued equally alongside technical skills.
- Promoting an open, honest, trusting relationship with those we are working with, facilitating and supporting change, and recognising that the approach needs to respond to the distinct needs and realities of the context.
- Shifting power, and building inclusivity, diversity and equity – both internally through the work we do, and in wider civil society through challenging approaches that reinforce unequal power.
